#Ardour vs cakewalk Pc
I heard Cakewalk is developing rapidly right now under the new parent company, and I respect its legacy (it was a top 3 MIDI DAW on pc for more than 30 years, right along with Cubase and PT), but, to be honest, I think it just had too much in its history and it shows. Actually, most of the tools are right there, you just need to find a way how you want to use them, and then there are loads of user plugins and extensions and what not. Reaper's (I mean, stock Reaper without SWS and customizations) weaker side is advanced MIDI and orchestration, but I've built my workflow in Reaper for that from scratch and love it now, although it took me some time to do that. I think if you are just starting out with DAWs, Reaper is a great choice, especially if you like to customize and experiment. Reaper can appear confusing, even menacing at first glance (especially the menus! God, those menus!) But if you bravely dive in and use Action List, it becomes quite friendly. Reaper, on the other hand, is very flexible with routing and to my personal tests is the most performance-optimized DAW I've ever tried working in.Ĭakewalk comes with bundled instruments and effects which can get you running from the start (although I don't know what they bundle now, but even in the paid/subscription days it wasn't something special), Reaper, on the other hand, is completely void of instruments (no, ReaSamplOmatic5000 and ReaSynth can't really be considered as instruments, as occasional tools - maybe), but comes with essential effects which are usually considered quite good.įunny, I always thought Cakewalk to be kinda self-intuitive, but maybe I've just got used to it since the early days when it was quite simple. The bad(ish) thing is that you will have to do it sooner or later, whether you want it or not.Ĭakewalk's performance and routing are not its strongest side (although still it should not get glitchy after 12 seconds).

The good thing is that you can set it up to be almost anything, it could be your dream DAW. The latter is both its strength and weakness. Reaper is unbelievably powerful and horrendously customizable. The transition was really hard for me (you know, almost 20 years, haha, and all that money I invested into it), but today I absolutely don't regret it, although I still miss 2 or 3 Cakewalk features like x-ray and ProChannel. After that, I switched to Reaper completely, though I've been using it before occasionally. when Cakewalk (I mean the company) was closed down by Gibson, what was it, 2015? Somewhere there. I've been a Cakewalk Sonar/Pro Audio user since 1998 up until. We'd love to hear what you have produced with Reaper, but please post it in the weekly sticky.
